I just finished one of the more popular books that is out right now, Divergent. I usually try to read books that are off the radar, however, I do like to read books before I see the movies that they are based on. My daughter is sixteen and is begging me to take her to see this one, so I sat down and read the book.
The book is set in the future, after society has broken down, and people were forced to decide how they would like to proceed with society to prevent wars and disagreements. In futuristic Chicago, there are some reminders of the past, such as streets and buildings that have been abandoned, etc. While people are grouped in what is called "factions" based on their personality traits, there are people who do not fit into just one group, these people are called divergent and must try to blend in with society, because they are believed be a problem and are capable of starting wars and being a threat to the modern society.
This book follows Tris, a sixteen year old girl who chose to switch factions when she attending the choosing ceremony, in which teenagers must choose which faction they want to join and spend their adult life with. She switched from a faction that was all about helping others to a faction that is tough and daring all of the time. While being initiated into the Dauntless faction, she falls in love with one of her instructors and discovers that she is divergent and what it means to her. She also uncovers secrets that a war is brewing and she must try to do what she can to stop it.
This book was a great read, and the story moved along nicely without getting boring. While it was around five hundred pages, I was able to finish in less than a week, reading it in my spare time. If you are a fan of The Hunger Games, I recommend this book, it reminds me of a futuristic Hunger Games.
